Welcome to Keziah Dance Theatre
Nice to meet you, I'm Kez.
Grab yourself a cuppa and continue reading if you would like to know a little more about me, Keziah Dance Theatre and why I have finally created this website.
I have been performing since a very early age and had reached the conclusion that my chosen career would be 'something artsy' long before high school. I have had the privilege of training with some wonderful, encouraging and nurturing dance/ drama/ music teachers in my 20 something years, but I have also encountered some not-so-wonderful examples.
This experience is what I believe to have influenced my own teaching approach and personal ethos- the arts are for EVERYONE!
The world of performing arts is no longer the exclusive thing it used to be, it is no longer reserved for the Uber-rich, Uber-posh etc. I believe in today's society, the arts should be accessible to all, regardless of age, shape, colour, culture, ability. In my sessions everyone is welcome.
I set up Keziah Dance Theatre in 2017 as I wanted a way to practice dance and drama my way, for everyone. Syllabus free and person-centred. I have only just finished this website because technology is not one of my strong points and it took a few tries to learn how to work the internet! (Never say "I can't do it" without saying "yet").
At Keziah Dance Theatre, I have a 'come-as-you-are' policy in my workshops. So long are you are willing to come and try new things; I will not require you to wear uniform, instead dress in clothes you can move freely in and footwear appropriate for the class. There is no need to compare yourself to others because we are all beautifully different and that is what makes our art so special. You won't find mirrors in my classes (if I can help it!), you probably won't be expecting my choice in music either... Snacks and water are a must; if you do not fuel your body, it will not perform the way you want it to!
Often in my sessions, you may hear me say "What do you want to do? This is your class, not mine". This isn't something I say to excuse my lack of a class plan (I tend to prepare about 4 scenarios), it is because I don't believe cookie cutter classes work. The same exercises, every week, regurgitated to every class. We are all unique and our learning styles vary, this can be seen in the art we produce and should be reflected in our practice. I will observe the group in front of me and try to tailor the session to their needs.
Need to burn off some excess energy? I will give you silly learning games.
Feel ready to focus? I will provide character development or sequences.
Tired and needing to refuel? Meditation and massage to finish it is!
It is my goal to give each person I encounter a unique and personal experience, I just hope that some of my joy for performing is shared with you.
Welcome to Keziah Dance Theatre, if you have any questions don't be afraid to drop me a message.
Thanks for reading,
